Cambridge, the other major city in the area is located in the south eastern part of the region with a population of just over 120,000. Cambridge came into existence in 1973 with the amalgamation of the municipalities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local residents felt the merger was a "shotgun marriage" foisted upon them by the Ontario provincial government.
