Tsavo: A Magnificent Treasure Which Epitomizes A Great East African Safari Exploration. A Journey That Echoes Runaway Recollections.
Under the enclose of the tent a ear shattering splash followed by loud grunts awoke me beckoning me to think it was daybreak! The hippos in haste to reach the pond must have run at bursting swiftness to jump into the water before sunrise above the azure skies.
Still sleepy and not feeling like climbing out of the cuddly bed, I peer outside the gazebo, it was still dim and the hippos were mumbling so close by. I unzipped the tent and in the flashlight, round eyes spaced apart looked back at me out of the dark.
It was only 4am and the hippo pod was abuzz. What-ever changed about the idea that hippos graze out all night - this is certainly a Tsavo safari.
The pool dazzled underneath the reflection of a clear star dotted sky. Now, fully awake, I explore the pool for other life and several meters from the grunting hippos, sleeping in the rim of the pool are two crocodiles. I cannot go back to bed now with plenty happening just under my deck.

After a healthful breakfast, an aid accompanies us for the stroll highlighting the bird's species plus the crocodiles. A Greyish crowned heron on a hippo's backside gives a sigh of relief as the hippo makes its way about the shallow pond. Petite footed African jacanas land on the suspended leaves of the water lilies and a terrific white egret stands by the shores scanning us.
On the patio of a shelter, a couple of colourful kingfishers dive inside the pools as the encrusted Malachite and grey headed kingfishers on the shrubs look on as two adolescent alligators bask under the sun adjacent the tent.
"This is actually an entire ecosystem" remarks the guide. "There are no fences so the wildlife have right of way." "During drought, elephants, giraffes, water bucks walk here when water is rare elsewhere".
It's unbelievable that the trek across the grounds has lasted from breakfast to lunchtime. A dotted monitor lizard scampers ahead of our trail as it disappears into the dense shrub. Soon we reach the crocodile nursery by the pool where the spring water gushes.
A petite crocodile lies on the hard stone oblivious of our presence. The crystal clear pool of bubbling water is quite busy with the little charges. We admire how this tiny one will later grow into a monster sized crocodile. What a morning!
